In its first full quarter since buying a failed bank, Miami Lakes-based BankUnited reported net income of $79.3 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, making it the most profitable bank in South Florida, according to data from the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council. The bank earned $37.6 million from May 22 – when it assumed the assets of the failed BankUnited FSB – through June 30. CEO John Kanas told members of the during a luncheon Tuesday that they should expect a big deal by his bank in the next week. With the support of major New York private equity firms, Kanas established the Miami Lakes-based bank in May after it won the bidding with the following the failure of BankUnited FSB. As of June 30, it had $921 million in equity capital and could potentially draw on more capital from its private equity owners.
